Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most common questions we receive. If you can’t find other answers you’re looking for, please feel free to call us at 610-520-1127 or reach out via our contact form.

Q: How fast will I lose weight?

A: Most of our patients lose between 6 to 15 pounds per month, depending on age, activity level, insulin resistance and medical status, and initial body weight when they begin. The first week will be the fastest, and can be up to 7 pounds of weight loss. Every single person is different, but a very comprehensive blood test that is ordered at the first visit, will give the doctor a good idea of how fast you will lose. She will go over this with you after the first visit.

Q: How successful is the Balance program?

A: Our patients are very successful at losing weight, more than 99% lose weight, which is almost everyone. The more important statistic is that 95% of people who reach goal do not regain their weight. We also know, from our statistics, that about 95% of people who take a break from the program for whatever reason (illness, job change, moving, personal problems,) when they come back, they have not gone back to their original starting weight and most have regained very little of their previous weight. This tells us that our patients have made a permanent life style change. In our program, we are looking for permanent, not temporary, weight loss.
Comments we have received are:

  • “I can’t believe how easy this is, I really do not feel hungry at all.”
  • “I have so much energy, I wish I had found your program a long time ago.”
  • “I could stay on this food program forever, it really tastes good.”
  • “I love the way I look and feel.”

Q: What happens if I stop losing weight?

A: If you stop losing weight,a change needs to be made to your eating program. We will go over your program with you, discuss it, and definitely make adjustments. This does happen, for many reasons, one of which is that the body adapts to your eating and exercise, your body pumps up the secretion of your hunger hormone to try to get you back to your original weight (yes, your body is fighting you) as well as that your body will hit a plateau after anywhere from 8% to 12& of body fat loss. We have seen this many times, and we know what to do to get the weight moving again so you continue to lose weight.

Q: What will I be eating?

A: You will be eating a special program designed to your specific needs. All of your foods can be purchased in any grocery store.  You will NOT be eating frozen meals, processed foods of any kind, or any meals bought from us. We want you to have a large variety of foods that not only help you lose weight, but to nourish your body, but also to suit your palate. We are looking for permanent weight loss and therefore you must like the foods you eat.

Q: Do I have to take medications or get shots?

A: We do not give any shots at all.
In some instances, if appropriate and after a discussion with you, a medication can be temporarily prescribed in very small doses. This is completely up to the patient, no one is required to take medication. The doctor will discuss this with you. No patient stays on medication permanently, it is always stopped when close to goal or after achieving goal. We are very conservative with medication, if used at all.
In terms of supplements, we will advise you what to take and if appropriate, as indicated by your blood work. Patients here are not encouraged to take hundreds of dollars worth of supplements that do nothing for them. A supplement like any pill has benefits and risks, we believe each supplement should be evaluated by a doctor who understands what it does and if it is necessary. We are very conservative with any medication or pill.

Q: How often do I have to come in?

A: We strongly recommend you come in twice per month, this is what we find causes patients to be most successful. We will work with your financial needs and schedule. What we care about is your success in weight loss.

Q: How much does is cost?

A: We do not publish our fees on the internet. A fee schedule is available upon request. Please call the office for this information. We will also be happy to answer any other questions you may have. Our number is 610 520 1127.

Q: Is my program confidential?

A: We strongly value your privacy and trust. No information on your program here will ever be shared with anyone, without your personal consent. We do follow HIPPA regulations. All of our charts are locked securely, on several levels including the chart room on the second floor. Nothing is recorded on the internet.

Q: Do you take insurance?

A: We do not take insurance. Many patients successfully receive partial re-imbursement from their insurance companies but this depends on your insurance, they vary enormously and they are complicated. We do not get involved with your insurance company and do not ever collect money from insurance companies. Please inquire with your insurance company to see if this applies to you.

Q: I do not live in the Philadelphia area. Can I still enroll in your weight loss program?

A: We SKYPE patients both nationally and internationally. We have many patients from all over the country who are treated only via Skype. Many of these patients have never come to the office at all. We would not do this if it were not successful, and we have found that we have the same success rate for patients that are skyped as patients that come into the office. Please call our office for more information. Again, our number is 610 520 1127

Q: I have a serious medical condition, will this be a problem?

A: We have many patients with diabetes (both on insulin and/or on oral medications), irritable bowel syndrome, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, celiac disease, PCOS, gluten intolerance, and many other medical problems in our practice. These patients are really successful at losing weight, and the medical doctor here will advise how to adjust your medications, (such as insulin, diabetic medications, and blood pressure medications) as you lose weight. We are not your primary care or specialty doctor (such as endocrinology), so we will actually not change any of these medications unless it is an emergency, but we will advise you to see your doctor when it is time for adjusting any medication you are taking.
